Tech Shortcut
What Does “My DMs Are Open Mean” on Twitter?
“My DMs Are Open” is just Twitter slang for “I am able to receive direct messages on Twitter because I have enabled the private DM feature.”
When someone says that their Twitter DMs are open, it just means that everyone can send them a direct message on the platform.
Needless to say, “My DMs Are Closed” means that they are unable to receive Twitter DMs because they have manually disabled the private DM feature.
On Twitter, users are able to manage how and when they use direct messages (unless a Twitter DM is not loading for one person, but that’s another story!). So, DMs open just mean that they can receive Twitter DMs without major problems.
Can They Read Twitter DM Without Opening?
Oh yes, yes they can! Twitter has a feature that allows users to turn off read receipts in DMs.
Therefore, even if they have DMs open, they can still read the DM without knowing you did.
In fact, I wrote a post about how to read Twitter DMs without them knowing, and there are a couple of workarounds that work perfectly for this – check it out!
How to Check if Twitter DMs Are Open
So, you now know what DMs open means on Twitter – now, it’s time to learn how to check if someone’s Twitter DMs are open.
The process is quite simple, and I’m going to guide you through it. Remember that you can change your direct messages settings on Twitter whenever you want.
Step 1: Open Twitter and Search for the User of the Person
Launch Twitter App, or log into your Twitter account from the website, and go to Twitter’s search bar.
Here, type in the username of the person you want to find out if their DMs are open or closed. Open their Twitter Profile Page, and proceed with the following step.
Step 2: Look for the Tiny DM Icon on Their Twitter Profile
Now, most times, you’ll need to follow the person in order to send them a DM.
After following them, look for the little DM icon that appears right under their Twitter banner, beside the Follow Button.
Let’s take a look at an example. Suppose that you want to send a DM to Elon Musk himself. Go to his profile, and as you can see, there is no sign of the DM icon or option:
This means that Elon Musk’s DMs are closed – what a shame! I wanted to share some interesting Twitter ideas with him.
In this case, you now know that Elon Musk’s DMs are not open at all.
Step 3: Send Them a DM if They Have DMs Open On Twitter
So, let’s look at another example. In this scenario, we are going to look for PayPal Support Twitter Account. As soon as you open their profile page and follow them, you will see the following DM icon:
This DM icon indicates that their Twitter DMs are open. That’s how you do it! It’s pretty easy. As a rule of thumb, remember that “DM icon after following = DMs open / no DM icon = DMs closed,” and you cannot send them a direct message.
Should I Allow Twitter Dms?
Well, it depends on your goals on Twitter. For instance, Mobile Wireless Trends DMs are open on Twitter if you want to send us a message.
But many people just use Twitter to see content and lurk around. If you don’t want to receive messages from other users, keep your DMs closed; if you wish to engage in conversations with other Twitter Users, then surely opening your DMs is the way to go.
How to Know if Your DMs Are Open on Twitter
The aforementioned steps work to check if someone’s Twitter DMs are open, but how do you know if your own DMs are open or closed?
Perhaps someone wanted to send you a DM because their replies were deboosted on Twitter, and you couldn’t see them. In that case, this is how you know if your DMs are open on Twitter:
- Log into Twitter and tap the little Direct Messages icon that appears there.
- Then, go to Direct Message settings, which is a little gear icon on the Direct Messages Tab.
- Here, select and mark the box that says “Allow message requests from everyone.” This will open your Twitter DMs.
- If the “Allow message requests from everyone” option is unmarked, then it means that your Twitter DMs are closed.
Tech Recap: How to Tell if Twitter DMs Are Open

Keep in mind that everyone has the ability to adjust their DM settings on Twitter. It’s not uncommon to find users who prefer to keep their direct messages closed, and that’s completely valid.
