What is Twitter Shadowban?

“Twitter Shadowban” is a term used to describe a situation where a user’s posts or account are sort of secretly limited or hidden without them being aware of the situation.

Here’s how it works: When someone is Shadowbanned on Twitter, their Tweets might not show up in search results, hashtags, or even on their followers’ timelines.

Essentially, they become kind of invisible to the wider Twitter community, which is certainly quite frustrating.

The tricky part about Shadowbanning is that Twitter doesn’t outright ban the user or notify them about it. They just quietly limit the visibility of their content.

If you’re Shadowbanned, you’ll still see your own Tweets and think everything’s normal, but others might not be able to find your content easily, and that can seriously reduce your engagement and reach.

Now, I should mention that the term “Shadowban” has been sometimes misused or exaggerated. Sometimes, people might experience a decrease in engagement due to other reasons, like changes in Twitter’s algorithms or just a decline in interest from their followers.

Types of Twitter Shadowbans

4 Different Types of Twitter Shadowban

There are four different types of Shadowbans on Twitter. They all affect the visibility of users, and although the general solutions are similar, it is important to learn about the various Shadowban types imposed on the Twitter Platform.

1. Twitter Search Ban

The Twitter Search Ban, also known as a “Stealth Ban,” targets a user’s Tweets and prevents them from showing up in search results.

When someone searches for specific keywords or hashtags related to your Tweets, they won’t find your content in the results. Therefore, your Tweets become significantly harder to discover by people who don’t already follow you.

This can severely limit your reach and visibility on the platform, making it challenging for you to attract new followers or engage with a broader audience. Check out our guide on How to Get Rid of Search Ban on Twitter to learn more about this specific type of Shadowban.

2. Twitter Search Suggestion Ban

A Twitter Search Suggestion Ban restricts your account from being recommended in the search auto-complete or suggestion feature.

When users begin typing something related to your profile or Tweets, Twitter typically shows suggestions to help complete their search. However, if you’re subjected to this type of Shadowban, your account won’t appear in those search suggestions.

We also have a guide on how to fix Twitter search suggestion ban – check it out for more information.

3. Twitter Reply Deboosting

The Twitter Reply Deboosting Shadowban affects the visibility of your replies to other users’ Tweets. Normally, when you reply to a Tweet, your response appears below the original Tweet and is visible to other users engaging with the same post.

However, if you are under this type of Shadowban, your replies may be pushed down in the reply thread or even hidden from other users.

Twitter Reply Deboosting is real – even Elon Musk acknowledges it in this Tweet posted by the CEO of Twitter. You can learn how to fix Twitter Reply Deboosting here.

4. General Twitter Ghost Ban

The General Twitter Ghost Ban is a broader form of Shadowban that affects multiple aspects of your Twitter presence. This type of ban can include various limitations like decreased visibility of Tweets in timelines, reduced reach through hashtags, and limited engagement with other users’ content.

The term “Ghost Ban” refers to the idea that you still have a presence on the platform, but your engagement and impact become almost invisible to others. In this case, we are talking about the ultimate form of Twitter Shadowban, and that’s exactly what we’ll cover in this guide.

How to Know if I Am Shadowbanned on Twitter

I mentioned before that people often exaggerate the term “Twitter Shadowban” – they might just lose visibility on Twitter because their content isn’t relevant anymore.

However, to determine if you are Shadowbanned on Twitter, there are a few things you can try.

1. Monitor Engagement Metrics: Keep a close eye on your Tweet engagement metrics, such as likes, ReTweets, replies, and impressions. If you notice a significant decrease in engagement compared to your usual activity, it could be a sign of a potential Shadowban. Reduced interactions and visibility might indicate that your Tweets are not reaching a broader audience.

2. Check Hashtag and Reply Performance: Hashtags play a crucial role in increasing Tweet visibility and attracting new audiences. If your Tweets aren’t showing up in hashtag feeds or are not receiving engagement from users outside your follower base, it might be an indication of a Shadowban. You may also check your reply rate and see if it changed. Checking reTweets also works.

3. Use a Twitter Shadowban Tester Tool: Twitter Shadowban tests should be taken with a grain of salt. They don’t always work, but they can provide you with an idea of whether you are Shadowbanned or not, such as this famous Twitter Shadowban Test

Here’s a general idea of how some Twitter Shadowban tests might work:

  • API Access: Some tests might use Twitter’s public API (Application Programming Interface) to gather data related to your account, Tweets, engagement, and visibility. The API allows third-party developers to access certain Twitter data and perform analyses on it.
  • Search Results: Some tests might simulate Twitter searches using specific keywords or hashtags related to your Tweets. They can then check if your Tweets are appearing in the search results or not.
  • Reply Visibility: Tests might examine the visibility of your replies to other users’ Tweets. If your replies are not showing up in the reply thread or are buried under other responses, it might be an indicator of a Shadowban.

How Long Will Shadowban Last on Twitter?

When I started Mobile Wireless Trends’ Twitter Account,  I noticed that it was Search Suggestion Banned from the platform.

Then, we uploaded some Twitter content, and the Shadowban disappeared after a few days.

Based on this information, and on other Twitter user reports, this is how long Twitter Shadowbans last:

1. Sometimes, Shadowbans Automatically Lift After 48 to 72 Hours: In some cases, a Twitter Shadowban might be temporary, lasting for a short period before being automatically lifted by Twitter’s algorithms. This timeframe is often reported to be around 48 to 72 hours. During this time, Twitter’s systems may reevaluate your account’s behavior, engagement patterns, and adherence to the platform’s rules.

2. Twitter Shadowban Can Last Several Days, Even Weeks: On the other hand, not all Shadowbans are short-lived. Depending on the severity of the violation or the underlying issues, a Shadowban on Twitter can persist for several days or even weeks. This prolonged duration can be frustrating for users, as it can significantly impact their ability to reach a wider audience and engage with their followers.

3. If You Don’t Do Anything, the Shadowban Won’t Go Away: One essential thing to remember is that if you suspect you are Shadowbanned on Twitter, taking no action or continuing the same behaviors that led to the ban won’t make it go away. Ignoring the problem may further affect your account’s performance and reputation on the platform.

Will Twitter Shadowban Go Away?

Twitter Shadowban can go away, but only if you do things right. Shadowbans on Twitter affect new and old accounts alike, but it’s more common on newly created Twitter accounts.

Generally, if the Shadowban does not disappear after a couple of days, then it is imperative to take action.

Before we get to learn how to fix Twitter Shadowban, let’s continue understanding how this works.

Twitter Shadowban Statistics & Facts

The following Twitter Shadowban statistics and facts were gathered by our editorial team. Mobile Wireless Trends took publicly available information to inform our readers about some of the most important things to consider about Twitter Shadowbans.

Twitter Shadowban Statistics & Facts

1. Over 200 Tweets with the Hashtag #Shadowban Are Posted Every Week

The hashtag #Shadowban has become a prevalent topic on social media, with a staggering number of over 200 related Tweets being posted every week.

This information was obtained by Mobile Wireless Trends through an analysis conducted on TweetBinder.com, a platform designed to track and measure the reach of hashtags on Twitter. The significant volume of Tweets using this hashtag suggests that it has captured the attention and concern of a wide-ranging online community.

As the hashtag continues to gain momentum, users are likely to share their experiences, opinions, and concerns about potential Shadowbans they believe they might be facing. This surge in Tweets may indicate that more people are becoming aware of the issue, or it could also signify an escalation of alleged cases of Shadowbanning across the Twitter platform.

2. Shadowban “Does Not Officially Exist,” But Elon Musk Refers to It as “Deamplify”

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has acknowledged the concerns of users who suspect that their content is being suppressed on the platform, a practice commonly known as “Shadowbanning.” However, he prefers to refer to this tactic as “deamplify,” as you can see in this Elon Musk Tweet.

This contradicts an official post on Twitter’s Blog titled “Setting the record straight on shadow banning,” – they say that Twitter does not Shadowban users, but even their newest CEO acknowledges that the algorithm “deamplifyes” users.

Also, The Atlantic reported on Musk’s approach to addressing these concerns raised by users who feel they have been Shadowbanned or experienced a decline in visibility.

People from various backgrounds, including those with political leanings, have sought clarification from Musk regarding their limited visibility on the platform. In response, Musk has promised to address these issues and investigate the matter further.

3. Most New Twitter Accounts Start Out Shadowbanned

I talk from personal experience, user testimonies, and individual research posted on different social media platforms (such as Reddit) when I say that most newly created Twitter profiles start out Shadowbanned.

Based on new evidence, when users create new accounts, especially those established after January 1st, 2023, they may initially experience limited visibility on the platform.

The Shadowban, or “deamplify,” process seems to be related to Twitter’s efforts to combat bot activity on the platform. The user believes that Twitter wants to ensure that real humans are using the platform for genuine interactions and engagements with other users.

In my opinion, Shadowbanning newly created profiles often comes with legitimate reasons for the restriction, such as engaging in excessive spamming, using duplicate content across multiple Tweets, or tagging and hashtagging excessively.

To gather additional supporting evidence for our theory, we took a look at Twitter’s Inactive Account Policy.

According to Twitter, to keep an account active, users are advised to log in at least every 30 days. Accounts that remain inactive for prolonged periods may be subject to permanent removal. This is a clear part of Twitter’s measures to curb bot activity on the platform, which results in collateral damage (Shadowbanning).

4. Twitter Faces $250 million lawsuit over allegations of Shadowbaning Politicians

In a significant legal development, Twitter finds itself embroiled in a lawsuit seeking a whopping $250 million in damages.

The lawsuit, filed by US Representative Devin Nunes, a California Republican, alleges that Twitter deliberately censors conservative voices through a practice known as “shadow-banning” while profiting from objectionable and defamatory content.

Rep. Nunes has also named political consultant Liz Mair, as well as Twitter users @DevinNunesMom and @DevinCow, as additional defendants in the lawsuit. He claims that Mair and the two Twitter accounts engaged in a series of attacks and defamatory actions against him, and further accuses Twitter of failing to address these complaints appropriately.

The lawsuit was initially reported by Fox News, and it was filed in Virginia state court.

Notably, Twitter has previously denied accusations of suppressing conservative content through shadow-banning (!).

Additionally, the lawsuit highlights the actions of another Twitter account, @DevinNunesMom, which impersonated Nunes’s mother and falsely accused him of perjury and obstruction of justice. However, this account has since been suspended by Twitter.

Interestingly, the Twitter account @DevinCow, which is also named in the lawsuit, remained active and saw a substantial surge in followers since news of the legal action broke.

So, can Twitter manually impose Shadowbans at their will? It appears so, but this will remain unconfirmed by now.

5. At Least 5% of All Twitter Accounts Have Been Shadowbanned on Twitter

A study titled “Silenced on Social Media: The Gatekeeping Functions of Shadowbans In The American Twitterverse” written by Kokil Jaidka from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Subhayan Mukerjee from the University of Pennsylvania, and Yphtach Lelkes from the University of Pennsylvania, gathers extremely useful information about Twitter Shadowbanning.

The study is very dense, complex, and long, and you can check the entire PDF by clicking here: Silenced on Social Media: The Gatekeeping Functions of Shadowbans in the American Twitterverse.

To summarize, these are the most relevant statistics and facts on Twitter Shadowban gathered by the study:

  • 5% to 6.2% of active Twitter accounts (1,731 out of 27,718) incurred at least one Shadowban over the year of data collection.
  • 408 accounts faced two or more Shadowbans.
  • The most common type of Shadowban was down-tiered replies, or Twitter reply deboosting (5.33% of accounts).
  • Search bans affected 0.91% of accounts, search suggestion bans affected 0.57%, and ghost bans affected 0.13%.
  • Older and verified accounts were less likely to be Shadowbanned.
  • Accounts showing bot-like behavior were more likely to be Shadowbanned.

How to Get Rid of Twitter Shadowban: 9 Proven Solutions

Now, let’s finally learn how to get rid of Twitter Shadowban.

At Mobile Wireless Trends, our mission is to provide reliable solutions to your problems. Based on our extensive analysis, we have identified 9 effective methods that have proven to fix  Twitter Shadowban issues.

Fix #1: Revise Your Content and Update Your Twitter Profile

Let’s begin with the most important part: your own Twitter profile.

It’s all about trying NOT TO LOOK LIKE A BOT, and look like a real person instead. We know that Twitter is to express ourselves, but posting certain types of content or acting like a bot may lead to Shadowbanning on Twitter.

To address this problem, consider the following tips:

  1. Analyze Your Tweets: Take a closer look at your past Tweets to identify any content that might have violated Twitter’s rules or guidelines. Remove or revise any Tweets that may be offensive, contain hate speech, promote violence, or violate any other Twitter policies.
  2. Check Your Profile Information: Ensure that your profile information, such as your bio, username, and profile picture, complies with Twitter’s guidelines. Avoid using any content that could be considered offensive or misleading, and always use original content when editing your profile. If Twitter Profile Update Failed, check out our related guide to learn how to fix this.
  3. Update Your Privacy Settings: Review your privacy settings to make sure they are in line with your preferences. Adjust settings related to who can see your Tweets, who can tag you in photos, and who can send you direct messages.
  4. Avoid Repetitive Posting: Twitter may flag accounts that engage in automated or repetitive posting as spam.
  5. Be a Human: That’s it. That’s the advice. A real human would undoubtedly personalize their profile based on their unique preferences, ideas, and personality. The cornerstone of fixing Twitter Shadowban is embracing your humanity on the platform.

Fix #2: Avoid Using Banned Hashtags and Uploading Controversial Tweets

The definition of controversial might be subjective for some, and very clear for others.

I prefer not to get into the definition of controversial as I know you, as a reader, might disagree with me. However, if we use common sense, we know how to spot controversial topics from a distance.

Also, using banned hashtags (learn how to report hashtags on Twitter here)  might certainly lead to Twitter Shadowban, mostly if you do so multiple times.

Follow these tips to complete this fix:

  1. Check for Banned Hashtags: Before using hashtags in your Tweets, do some research to ensure they are not banned or associated with controversial topics. Banned hashtags are often used to curb the spread of inappropriate or harmful content. You can find banned hashtags by searching for them in the search bar and seeing if they appear on Twitter suggestions.
  2. Be Mindful of Sensitive Topics: Twitter may flag and limit the reach of Tweets discussing sensitive or controversial topics, especially those related to hate speech, violence, or harassment. Before posting, consider the potential implications of your Tweets and avoid engaging in harmful discussions.
  3. Engage in Positive and Constructive Conversations: Focus on promoting positive content and engaging in constructive conversations with your followers. Encouraging healthy discussions can help improve your reputation and reduce the likelihood of Shadowbans.

Fix #3: Follow Twitter’s Terms of Service and Avoid Using Third-Party Tools

A while ago, Twitter banned third-party developers from creating Twitter clients. This means that third-party apps such as Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Aviary, Birdie, and others are no longer allowed to operate. The ban is part of a policy change that prevents developers from offering a substitute or similar services to Twitter’s official applications.

The Verge reported this issue, and it completely changed the Twitter landscape. If you are using similar third-party tools, you might consider removing them from your account to fix Twitter Shadowban. Therefore, this solution consists of the following:

  • Adhere to Twitter’s Rules and Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with Twitter’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Ensure that your actions on the platform align with these rules to avoid any penalties, including Shadowbans.
  • Avoid Using Automated Services: Refrain from using third-party tools or services that promise to increase your followers, likes, or reTweets through automated means. Twitter strictly prohibits such practices and may penalize accounts that engage in them.

Fix #4: Engage Authentically with Other Twitter Accounts

Acting naturally on Twitter is one of the best ways to lift Shadowban on your profile. We’ll soon explain in-detail why, but for now, check out the following tips:

  1. Be Active and Responsive: One of the key elements of authentic engagement is being active on Twitter. Regularly post interesting and relevant content, and be responsive to comments, mentions, and direct messages from your followers. Show that you are genuinely interested in interacting with your audience.
  2. Participate in Conversations: Engage in conversations with other Twitter users by responding to their Tweets, reTweeting interesting content, and sharing your thoughts on relevant topics. Meaningful interactions with others demonstrate that you are an active and engaged member of the community.
  3. Use Mentions and Tags Thoughtfully: When mentioning or tagging other Twitter accounts in your Tweets, do so thoughtfully and with a purpose. Avoid excessive tagging or spamming, as this could be seen as spammy behavior and may lead to penalties.
  4. Join Twitter Threads and Hashtag Discussions: Participate in Twitter threads and discussions related to your interests or industry. Engaging in relevant hashtags and discussions can increase your visibility and help you connect with like-minded people.
  5. Share User-Generated Content: ReTweet and share user-generated content that aligns with your profile or interests. Recognizing and promoting other users’ content fosters a sense of community and encourages reciprocal engagement.
  6. Address Feedback and Concerns Respectfully: If someone provides feedback or expresses concerns about your content, products, or services, address them respectfully. Engaging in a positive and constructive manner shows that you value your audience’s input.
  7. Join Twitter Polls and Surveys: Participate in Twitter polls and surveys to share your opinions and experiences. This active involvement shows that you are an engaged member of the Twitter community (can you see who voted on a Twitter poll?).
  8. Avoid Buying Followers or Engagement: Purchasing followers or engagement may artificially inflate your metrics, but it won’t lead to authentic and meaningful interactions. Focus on growing your following organically through genuine engagement.
  9. Be Respectful and Inclusive: Ensure that your interactions are respectful and inclusive. Avoid engaging in offensive or divisive discussions that may lead to negative consequences for your account.

Fix #5: Comply with Twitter Daily Limits

Twitter is rate-limiting everything you can do on the platform. If you are unfamiliar with Twitter Daily Limits (such as Twitter DM Limit) , then check them out:

  1. Direct Messages: The daily limit for sending direct messages is 500 messages. If you reach this limit, Twitter will notify you with an error message. T
  2. Tweets: The daily Tweet limit is set at 2,400 Tweets. This includes both original Tweets and reTweets. The limit is further divided into semi-hourly intervals.
  3. Changes to Account Email: You can make up to 4 changes to your account email per hour.
  4. Following: Twitter sets a technical follow limit of 400 accounts per day. Additionally, once your account follows 5,000 other accounts, any further follow attempts will be subject to account-specific ratios.

If you exceed any of the daily limits, Twitter will display an error message indicating the specific limit you’ve reached. For time-based limits (Direct Messages, Tweets, changes to account email, and API requests), you can try again after the time limit has elapsed.

To avoid hitting Twitter limits and comply with this rule to avoid Shadowbanning, consider these tips:

  • Plan your daily activity: Have a content schedule and avoid excessive Tweeting or following within a short period.
  • Prioritize engagements: Focus on meaningful interactions rather than aggressive actions like mass following or spammy Tweeting.
  • Monitor your activity: Keep track of your actions and ensure they align with Twitter’s guidelines.

Fix #6: Pay For a Twitter Blue Membership

Twitter Blue was introduced a few months ago, and since then, some Twitter users say that using the platform without Twitter Blue “feels like being Shadowbanned.”

Paying or renewing Twitter Blue is a great way to fix Twitter Shadowban as Blue Members enjoy prioritized boost in replies and search, according to the official Twitter website.

Here’s how Twitter Blue could potentially assist in mitigating Shadowban risks:

  1. Prioritized Rankings: As a Twitter Blue subscriber, the Tweets you interact with will receive a small boost in their ranking. This means that engaging with relevant content can potentially increase its visibility and reach. Additionally, your replies will be boosted, ranking them closer to the top in conversations.
  2. Verified Tab Visibility: Twitter Blue subscribers appear in the Verified tab within other users’ notifications tab. Being featured in this tab highlights your replies, mentions, and overall engagement. This increased visibility could attract more attention to your account, leading to higher engagement rates and potentially reducing the risk of being Shadowbanned.

Fix #7: Take a Break From Twitter

Some Twitter users say that taking a break from Twitter works to lift the Shadowban restriction on their accounts.

Believe it or not, taking a break from the Twitter Platform can help you a lot – these are some of the benefits of stopping using Twitter from 3 to 7 days:

  1. Reset Algorithmic Behavior: Twitter’s algorithms analyze user behavior to determine content visibility and engagement. If the platform’s algorithms detect suspicious or spam-like behavior from an account, it may result in a Shadowban. By taking a break, you interrupt any potential negative patterns or behaviors that could have triggered the Shadowban in the first place.
  2. Avoiding Aggressive Actions: Engaging in aggressive actions like excessive following, mass liking, or using automated tools can raise red flags and result in restrictions or Shadowbans. A break from Twitter gives you time to reflect on your engagement habits and ensures you don’t inadvertently violate Twitter’s rules.
  3. Refresh Content and Interaction: A temporary absence from Twitter allows you to refocus your content strategy and engagement approach. When you return, you can come back with fresh and relevant content that aligns with your followers’ interests, increasing the chances of positive interactions and reducing the risk of being Shadowbanned.
  4. Regain Account Trust: If you were previously Shadowbanned, taking a break and refraining from any suspicious activity during that time can help rebuild Twitter’s trust in your account. It demonstrates that you are not engaging in any manipulative or spammy behavior.

Fix #8: Master Twitter’s Recommendation Algorithm

Mastering Twitter’s recommendation algorithm can be a game-changer if you want to lift a Twitter Shadowban.

It’s all about understanding the factors that influence the algorithm and using them to your advantage. When you get a good grasp of how the algorithm works, you can increase the visibility and engagement of your Tweets, which is crucial to overcoming a Shadowban.

According to Twitter’s Open-Source Code (GitHub), this is how the Twitter algorithm work:

  • Likes (30x): Likes, or “favorites,” have a substantial impact on Tweet visibility. When users like a Tweet, it signals to the algorithm that the content is valuable and resonates with the audience, resulting in increased visibility.
  • ReTweets (20x): ReTweets play a significant role in boosting a Tweet’s visibility. When users reTweet a Tweet, it is shared with their followers, potentially reaching a larger audience, leading to increased engagement.
  • Images/Videos (2x): Tweets with images or videos are given higher priority by the algorithm. Visual content tends to be more eye-catching and engaging, leading to increased visibility.
  • Replies (1x): The number of replies a Tweet receives contributes to its visibility. Replies show that the Tweet is engaging users and generating discussions, which is considered a positive signal by the algorithm.
  • Trusted Circle (3x): If a Tweet is interacted with by users within your trusted circle, such as your followers or accounts with whom you frequently engage, it receives a boost in visibility. The algorithm assumes that interactions from familiar accounts are more relevant and valuable to you.
  • Twitter Blue (2-4x): Twitter Blue is a premium subscription service on Twitter that offers various features to subscribers. Tweets from Twitter Blue subscribers may receive a slight boost in visibility compared to regular Tweets.

Mastering Twitter’s recommendation algorithm means strategically using factors like engagement, visual content, leveraging your trusted circle, and possibly considering Twitter Blue.

By doing so, you can improve the performance of your Tweets, reach a broader audience, and ultimately lift any existing Twitter Shadowban on your account.

Think about a Twitter user named Sarah. Sarah faces a Twitter Shadowban, impacting her Tweet visibility. She masters the algorithm by focusing on valuable content, using visual elements, engaging with her trusted circle, and subscribing to Twitter Blue, ultimately overcoming the Shadowban and regaining her Tweet visibility – it’s simple and highly effective.

Fix #9: Contact Twitter Support Team

Twitter does not officially recognize that they impose Shadowban on people.

If you have tried all the fixes in this guide, and none of them worked, then wait for a few days. If, after at least 2 weeks, your account still appears to be Shadowbanned, then it’s time to contact Twitter.

Some users say that contacting Twitter Support has helped them to get rid of Twitter Shadowban or appeal a Twitter suspension.

But how do we contact Twitter if they do not officially help users to solve Shadowbanning issues?

Log into your Twitter account, go to the Twitter Support Website here, select “I’m having problems with account access,” and choose “I’m trying to reactivate my account.”

I know this is not a form to directly fill Shadowban appeals, but there are none. Under “Describe the problem you’re having,” use the following Copy & Paste Twitter Shadowban Report Template:

Dear Twitter Support Team,

I am writing to seek your assistance regarding a concerning issue I’ve been experiencing on my Twitter account. It seems that my account has been Shadowbanned, and despite trying various methods to resolve the problem, I have not seen any improvement.

I have been an active user of Twitter for [mention duration] and have always respected the platform’s policies and guidelines. However, in recent times, I have noticed a significant drop in my Tweet visibility and interactions, which led me to suspect that my account might be Shadowbanned.

I have taken the following steps to address the issue, but to no avail:

  • Content Revision.
  • Hashtag and Tweet Curation.
  • Compliance with Terms of Service.
  • Authentic Engagement.
  • Adherence to Daily Limits.

Understanding and Mastering the Algorithm.

Despite implementing these fixes, I am still facing the Shadowban, and my Tweets remain hidden from many users, hindering my ability to actively participate in conversations and connect with my followers.

Could you please review my account and provide any insights or recommendations to lift the Shadowban? If there are any specific actions I need to take or any additional information you require, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

[Your Twitter Username]

[Your Email Address]

Submit the ticket, and wait for a few days. Twitter might not respond back, but the Shadowban might be lifted after sending them a message. You may also contact Twitter Support via their official Twitter account, but results are not guaranteed.

Can I Get Shadowbanned Again on Twitter?

Yes, you can get Shadowbanned again on Twitter, even if you’ve experienced a Shadowban in the past and had it lifted.

Once a Shadowban is lifted, it’s not a free pass to continue engaging in activities that got you Shadowbanned in the first place.

Twitter’s algorithms keep a close eye on user behavior, and if they detect any suspicious or rule-breaking actions from your account, they may impose a Shadowban once more.

You can check how this Twitter user says that he has been Shadowbanned multiple times, so then again, it’s not like you can’t get Shadowbanned again.

Does Shadowban Only Happen On Twitter?

No – other platforms also impose Shadowbans on their users. Just like Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram employ algorithms and content moderation measures to ensure their platforms remain safe and engaging for users. These algorithms look for behavior that violates their community guidelines and may impose various forms of restrictions to address any potential issues.

On TikTok, users can experience something similar to a Shadowban, where their videos receive limited visibility on the “For You” page or specific hashtags. This can lead to a TikTok search ban.

Facebook and Instagram also employ content moderation algorithms that may reduce the visibility of posts or accounts if they are flagged for violating community standards. We made two related articles: fixing Instagram search ban and fixing Facebook search ban.

Like with Twitter, the specifics of how these restrictions work on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram are not always transparent, and users may not receive direct notifications about being “Shadowbanned.”

However, the evidence is there, and we know how many users have tried to fight against this unofficial restriction on multiple social media platforms.

FAQ

What Does Twitter Shadowban Look Like?

Twitter Shadowban reduces the visibility of a user’s Tweets, making them harder to discover through search results, hashtags, and replies to others’ Tweets. The affected user may continue Tweeting as usual, but their engagement and reach with the wider Twitter community significantly decline without any explicit notification from Twitter.

How Common Is Shadowbanning on Twitter?

Based on the study titled “Silenced on Social Media: The Gatekeeping Functions of Shadowbans In The American Twitterverse,” conducted by Kokil Jaidka, Subhayan Mukerjee, and Yphtach Lelkes, it was found that Shadowbanning on Twitter is relatively rare, as it can happen to only 5% of accounts. However, there’s been an increase in Twitter Shadowbans from January 2023 onward.
